Our Mindsets from Change to Evolution

Dr. Michael McElhenie, with three decades of experience in change leadership, the evolution of culture, and emotional intelligence, will present on the fundamental mindset behind most successful “change” interventions. Michael invites us to shift from CHANGE to EVOLUTION and explores how this shift in thinking is profoundly helpful to all involved – those striving to manage and lead change, and those who are asked to adapt to it. By shifting our thinking to evolution, people throughout organizations are invited to look at WHAT DOES NOT NEED TO CHANGE as well as WHAT MUST CHANGE. In biological evolution, the best traits and characteristics, those that help the organism thrive, are called upon to stay the same or even strengthen. As for the aspects that do not serve the organism, those do need to change. The same is true in organizations and all human systems. Michael will explore this mindset shift further and present case studies from decades of work where this simple shift from change to evolution made a world of difference. It catalyzed a shift from fear to excitement. It led people to feel honored and respected for what they’ve created. It invited truth-telling and greater connection. It invited people throughout the organization to co-create the desired organization, practices and culture while preserving its most functional, best elements.

    Key Takeaways:

    • To understand how the evolutionary mindset is used to catalyze positive, productive change in organizations and in other complex human systems.
    • To understand that Appreciative Inquiry is a fundamental component of the evolutionary mindset.
    • To recognize change practitioners’ opportunity in our current, uncertain times to bring the evolutionary mindset and associated appreciative approaches to change conversations happening nearly everywhere in society today.
